[04/23/17] New Chef Brings Big Ideas, Fresh Flavors to Afton’s Main Street Grill & Bakery
By Allison Collins Tri-Town News

*SNEAK PEEK*
AFTON – Josh Lewis, Harpursville native and current chef at the popular Afton Main Street Grill & Bakery at 174 Main St., has been bringing serious culinary prowess to the local eatery known for lunch, dinner and an impressive dessert smorgasbord, since his November, 2016 start. Working symbiotically with owner Liz Dawson, Lewis’s epicurean know-how and relevance have made for a revamped menu loaded with fresh, seasonal dishes destined to become favored fare.

Prior to returning to the area in which he grew up, Lewis honed his skills at various New York City eateries, even competing once on the Food Network’s “Chopped.” Before that, Lewis received his formal education from the Culinary Institute of America. After graduating he moved to Bethlehem, Pa., where he landed a job at the Emeril Lagasse-owned restaurant, Emeril’s Chop House, an experience he called “really fun.” “That’s a beautiful area and that was some serious energy,” said Lewis. Lewis noted that, prior to Emeril and the CIA, he got his first, admittedly more modest, kitchen job as a dishwasher at the age of 16.

Lewis’s arrival at the helm of the Afton kitchen was a matter of happenstance and timing. “My brothers and I decided to end our lease [in New York City],” said Lewis. “Then I just sort of fell into this with Liz [Dawson].” Lewis mentioned that he came upon an online advertisement by Dawson seeking a chef especially attuned to shifting culinary patterns with a focus on dinner service and creativity.
