Introduction

The day is unveiled as the morning sun slowly begins to rise above the black-green trees and deep-purple hills, each new angle of sunlight creating an original canvas upon which God's artwork appears to those who are awake to behold its glory. As dawn progresses, trees take on more distinct form and the buildings and structures on the hills rise out of a flat landscape as if elevated from below. Grass becomes a luxurious carpet of vibrant green as new sunlight reflects through droplets of morning dew. Vague forms of horses contentedly grazing become illuminated as the solar spotlight brings their once ghostly images into sharply focused view, allowing me to identify each one in turn. My eyes search for confirmation that my little herd has made it safely through another night. I see the tall black mare, the powerful dun, and my two grays. All is well.

This is a day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. God is ever faithful, each morning bringing new life and opportunity to his family. I rested well last night, safe in the assurance that though I slept, he was awake and watching over me. With dawn the responsibility for my horses passes from God to me, and I will be faithful to them until night returns and I pass the watch back to Heaven.

Have you noticed how birds seem to sing with special joy in springtime? Their music accompanies my study, as I pause again to look through my east window to the horses grazing beyond, grateful for yet another opportunity to walk with the Lord. My greatest blessing is being a child of God, knowing that he loves me beyond my capacity to comprehend. How can humans possibly grasp the unknowable truths of relationship with God, and to our savior, Jesus Christ? What could possibly bridge the distance between Heaven and earth and allow mere mortals a glimpse of eternity? It is grace.

The Holy Spirit gives each of God's children their own unique context, allowing them to gain understanding and to build relationship with God. For me, that context is expressed through horses. Twenty years training horses was my preparatory school, giving me the key I needed to finally grasp what were previously only vague elements of my pursuit of relationship with God. This key is the relationship I have with my grays. I chose them and they chose me. As I work through my daily lessons with the Holy Spirit, in turn, I am able to direct and deepen the bond I share with my grays.

The secret of life is relationship with God. The important question is not how, why, where, or when; the important question is 'who'? This book is a collection of concepts and stories offered for the sole purpose of sharing how horses allow us to find closer relationship with God. Woven into the fabric of the message is love, correction, wonderment, obedience, accountability, success, failure, birth and death. But the heartbeat that gives each of these life is relationship to the Lord. (more)
